A Heritage Breed and MORE!
NEW MEXICAN DALL SHEEP
New Mexico Dall sheep appeal to both the meat and hunting industries, sporting trophy
size horns on large muscular bodies. These sheep are described as never shear,
white in color, with both ewes and rams horned, ewes’ horns averaging length around
six to nine inches, mature rams horns averaging between thirty and forty inches. They
are excellent flockers, with high lamb survivability.
Majestic Rams quickly grow long beautiful horns with massive horn bases. Their
average weight ranges between 200 and 275 pounds, roughly 50 to 100% increase in
size over other horned hair breeds.
The ewes are excellent mothers that are prolific and year-round breeders. They do well
in feedlots or on the range. They are being bred selectively to include these good
qualities as well as their frequency of multiple births.
New Mexico Dall sheep are being selectively bred to increase horn growth, meat, and
hardiness while maintaining the shedding ability.
Research into Belen, NM, family journals dating back to the 1600's, has turned up
mentions of a type of hair breed sheep, Chamorro, that shed a wooly undercoat in the
springtime. A concerted effort has been made over the years to purchase and preserve
sheep found on some of the oldest ranches who resemble those mentioned in the
family journals, notwithstanding their having been crossbred almost to extinction with
various woolen breeds. Having lost much of their distinctive look, Terra Patre Farms, in
an effort to revive this old breed has taken steps to breed out the wool and restore the
hair sheep qualities which more typified this ancient breed by backcrossing the original
Mouflon and another hair sheep breed spin-off - the Iberian hair sheep borrowed by the
Romans, the Wiltshire Horn sheep. To this reinvented Chamorro sheep resembling a
cross between the Texas Dall sheep and the Ovis Dali Dali sheep of Alaska, Terra
Patre sheep farm has given a more modern name; to wit the Ovis Dali Novo Mexicanis
or New Mexico Dall hair sheep.
Along with other farms and ranches, Terra Patre is working to establish foundational
stock that will ensure the future and preserve the past of these links to one of the first
sheep brought in to the United States.
